Project Approval Milestone

Objectives of this Checklist

Get approval to proceed with development by providing the following information:

• Business case, strategic fit
• Product and customer requirements and overview
• Schedule and resource estimates
• Development Life Cycle Model identified

General Checklist

• Form the Product Team.
• The completed Product Marketing Plan (PMP) discusses strategic fit, worldwide business case, and marketing risk (an elaboration of the business case and market analysis from Investigation Approval). It is reviewed by the Product Team, Product Marketing management, Product Planning management, and International.
• The completed Product Requirements document (an elaboration of the customer and user requirements from Investigation Approval) is reviewed by the Product Team.
• International Marketing decides whether or not to localize the product.
• The completed Support Plan discusses resources and training requirements based on the PMP and Product Requirements document.
• The completed Product Overview is reviewed by the Product team, and includes:
  • Overview of features
  • Discussion of how these features fit the requirements
  • Prototypes and/or mock-ups, if available
  • Why this product is a winner (category shifting capabilities)
  • Architectural overview
  • List of known internal and external dependencies
• List all needed third-party code and technology. For each item, include:
  • Purpose for the acquisition
  • Contractual status and other legal considerations
  • Who is responsible for making and monitoring the acquisition
  • Who is responsible for integrating the acquisition
  • Who is responsible for testing the acquisition
• The completed Project Assumption and Impact Analysis discusses:
  • Resources
  • Schedule
  • Technical
• The Product Team prepares and reviews a Schedule and Resource Estimates. The schedule covers all phases and milestones through First Customer Ship (FCS).
• The Product Team prepares and reviews a PLC Application Plan.
• Update the Project Folder with all deliverables.
• The Product Team documents a list of improvements and deviations from the Product Life Cycle.
